Carolyn

I'm wondering if you can give us an understanding of what its like to run our program in a rural area?

SAKGP is a great program to run in a rural area. Our school has sufficient room for our garden and we have been able to access things like spoiled hay and manures from local sources. I am not sure how they do that easily in the city. We have no trouble working with the Kitchen Garden Program In a rural area. The air is fresh- our vegetables herbs and fruits are growing well and we have great support from our community.

Carolyn

What is the population of your school? What size is your garden and kitchen?

Benarkin is a small two teacher school with at present 28 students. We operate our Kitchen Garden Program for all our students from Prep to Year 7. We do our Kitchen and Garden groups in two groups- one Prep to Year 2 and the other Year 3 to Year 7.
We have approximately 120-140 square metyres of garden growing space with additional space for compost heaps; chickens and our orchard of 20 trees at present. Out kitchen is constructed into 4 cooking areas each with a sink and hotplates. We have 2 large fridge/ freezer combos and 2 stoves with ovens. Our kitchenalso houses our dining area of 4 large extendable tables and our harvest table.
